Nicaragua bans ALL abortions
October 27, 2006
Nicaragua's Congress has banned all abortions, eliminating exceptions for rape and when the life of the mother is threatened.
President Enrique Bolanos is expected to approve the measure, which was approved Thursday on a 52-0 vote, with 9 abstentions and 29 representatives not showing up to vote, the New York Times reported.
The bill passed after lengthy and extensive efforts by Roman Catholics and evangelical Christians in the Central American country.
Left-wing Sandinistas in the legislature supported the bill. Even former Sandinista leader Daniel Ortega, once a devout Marxist who defended abortion rights when he led a socialist government in the 1980s, has been reconciled with the church and has become a strident opponent of abortion.
