Islamabad to host OIC conference on Refugees
’Pakistan Times’ Federal Bureau
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan would host an Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) Ministerial Conference on "The Problem of Refugees in the Muslim World" here on November 27.
The moot will be held in collaboration with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
This would be the first ever OIC conference to exclusively focus attention on refugee issues and their problems, said official sources here Monday.
The 57 OIC member states presently host over 9 million refugees and persons of concern to UNHCR, out of some 20 million globally, they added.
However, they said this figure does not include the Palestinian refugees, who fall within the specific mandate given by the UN General Assembly to United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA).
The conference would highlight the fact that OIC member states continue to generously provide protection and assistance to refugees, despite the fact that many refugee situations in these countries are of a protracted nature, sources informed.
They added that the moot would demand more resolute action to address the root causes of such refugee movements as well as more robust multilateral cooperation to find durable solutions.
The three main themes of the conference are: Enhancing refugee protection in the Muslim world; Enhancing multilateral cooperation in resolving refugee situations; Intensifying the search for durable solutions.
A series of trilateral preparatory meetings are being held between the representatives of the OIC General Secretariat in Jeddah; the UNHCR Headquarters in Geneva and the government of Pakistan, they added.
Likewise, the OIC Group in Geneva has continued to extensively deliberate upon and finalize the documents, which are expected to be adopted by the Conference.
These will include a concept paper, three working documents on each of the above stated themes, an Islamabad Declaration as well as a Plan of Action.
The government has designated Nayyar Agha, Chief Commissioner for Afghan Refugees, as the Chairman of the Task Force for the conference.
