Pope stresses family values in Spain
By Philip Pullella and Jane Barrett

VALENCIA, Spain (Reuters) - Pope Benedict urged Spain on Saturday to defend traditional values in a country where the Catholic church and Socialist government have clashed head-on over the legalisation of gay marriage.

Hundreds of thousands of people cheered the Pope’s remarks at a family rally in the coastal city of Valencia. By contrast, crowds booed and whistled Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, whose government has pushed through various laws to prize away the Church’s traditional grip on Spanish society.

At an evening celebration with pilgrims from around the world, the Pope urged politicians to value the traditional family.

"This is the best way to counter a widespread hedonism which reduces human relations to banality and empties them of their authentic value and beauty," he said, to waves of applause.

Spain legalised same-sex marriages last year and since then about 4,500 couples have wed, according to gay group FELGT. Local media said the Pope did not bring up the issue in a brief audience with Zapatero and instead focussed on world problems.

The Pope has branded gay unions an expression of "anarchic freedom" but said he wanted to focus on the positives, not negatives.

"The family is itself based primarily on a deep interpersonal relationship between husband and wife, sustained by affection and mutual understanding," the 79-year-old said, before hundreds of fireworks burst into the sky.

Families from around the world crammed around a futuristic arts and science centre for the night-time event, many of them laying out sleeping mats so they could camp out and wait for a papal mass on Sunday
